Italy keeps its heirs in 5 places, and they move between them on a calendar older than most countries. Where to be, in which month, and how to tell a dynasty from a rented week.
In short, current to October 2026

New money in Italy wears the logo. Old money wears the same navy blazer it wore in 1998, and the blazer was made 2 streets from where it lives. The families that have run Italian industry, land and banking for generations do not gather in one city. They follow a season: the mountains in February, the sea in August, the lake in between, and Milan for everything that requires a signature.
That makes them easy to find, if you know the calendar, and almost impossible to meet if you arrive in the wrong month. Below are the 5 places where the heirs of Italy, and the nepo babies of the next generation, actually spend the year. Each one is on the Patrician.ch board, with its own page for what living there costs, how safe it is and how long it takes to fly home.
| Place | When | The tell |
|---|---|---|
![]() | December to March | Greets the ski instructor by name |
![]() | July and August | The same umbrella since their grandfather |
![]() | September to June | A tailor, never a label |
![]() | July and August | A boat named after a grandmother |
![]() | April to October | Arrives in their own wooden boat |
Cortina hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and came back as co-host of Milano Cortina in 2026, and the families who skied it before the first Games still own the chalets above town. The Dolomites around it have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, which means nobody gets to build the view away.
The furs on Corso Italia at 11 in the morning tell you less than you think. Rentals have furs too. What gives a family away is the chalet: it has a name, the name is carved over the door, and nobody inside remembers who carved it.
The tell. Watch the ski instructor. A visitor books one by the hour. Old money greets theirs by his first name, because he taught their father to ski as well.

Forte dei Marmi grew up around a small fort that Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Tuscany had completed in 1788 to guard the marble shipments from the Apuan Alps. The marble left. The Florentine and Milanese families who came for the sea in the 20th century never did, and the Agnellis spent their summers here too.
The town runs on its bathing clubs, the bagni, and their rows of striped umbrellas. You can rent one in the back rows by the week. The front row is a different matter: it passes between the same families summer after summer, along with the cabin, the deckchair and the attendant who knows how everyone takes their coffee.
The tell. Ask which bagno. Old money names it before you finish the question, then tells you which year the family took the front row. If the answer is "this year", it was a booking.

The money in Milan is in the Quadrilatero della Moda, the 4 streets of Via Monte Napoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni and Corso Venezia, with Via Sant'Andrea inside. It is where the houses that built Italian fashion keep their flagships, and where the families behind them still keep apartments upstairs.
Milan is also where the season is decided. The opening night of La Scala on 7 December, the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, is the one evening that puts the whole of Milanese society in a single room. If you are only in Milan once a year, be there that night.
The tell. Compliment the jacket. New money tells you the label. Old money gives you the name of a tailor and the street he works on, and mentions that he also made their father's wedding suit.

Porto Cervo is the youngest place on this list. A consortium led by the Aga Khan began building the Costa Smeralda in the early 1960s, and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was founded on 12 May 1967. That makes it new money by Italian standards and very old money by anyone else's.
The town exists for the marina. In August the quay is lined with yachts bigger than the houses behind them, and the families who own them rarely appear in a headline. Their sons and daughters are on the beaches at Liscia di Vacca by 9.
The tell. Read the name on the stern. A boat named after a feeling, a wish or a number was bought recently. A boat named after a grandmother has been in the family, and so has the crew.

Lake Como has been where Milan's money goes to breathe since the 16th century. Villa d'Este at Cernobbio was built between 1565 and 1570 for a cardinal and has been a hotel since 1873. The villas between Cernobbio, Tremezzo and Bellagio that never became hotels are still homes, and Como has been weaving silk for the fashion houses of Milan for generations.
The lake rewards patience. Nobody meets old money at the hotel bar. You meet it at a lunch in Bellagio that started at 1 and has no reason to end.
The tell. Watch how they arrive. Visitors come by taxi or on the public ferry. Old money comes across the water in a varnished wooden runabout older than its driver, and ties it up without looking.

Each of the 5 is one of the 100 places on the board, with its own film, its taxes, its schools and an ordinary day there. Safest of the 5 on the board's index: Cortina d'Ampezzo. Most sun: Porto Cervo. Tap any frame to open it.
The families on this page do not visit Italy. They live in it, and a growing number of foreign families now do the same. Italy taxes a new resident's foreign income at a flat €300,000 a year, whatever the amount, plus €50,000 for each family member who joins, for up to 15 years under Article 24-bis. Income earned in Italy is taxed in the ordinary way. Citizens of the EU register on arrival, and others usually come on the elective residence visa or the investor visa.

Cortina d'Ampezzo in winter, Forte dei Marmi and Porto Cervo in July and August, and Lake Como from spring to autumn, with Milan for the rest of the year.
The calendar matters more than the place. The same families move between the 5 in the same order every year.
Yes. Florentine and Milanese families have summered there for generations, and the Agnellis did too.
The front row of umbrellas at the bathing clubs passes between the same families summer after summer.
Both. It was built from the early 1960s by a consortium led by the Aga Khan, so it is young by Italian standards.
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was founded in 1967. In August the marina is lined with superyachts.
December to March for skiing, with a quieter summer season in July and August.
Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and co-hosted Milano Cortina 2026.
In and around the Quadrilatero della Moda, the streets of Via Monte Napoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Sant'Andrea and Via Manzoni, and in Brera.
Lake Como is under 40 minutes away by train, which is why so many Milanese families keep a villa there.
Yes. A new resident can elect a flat €300,000 a year on foreign income, plus €50,000 for each family member, for up to 15 years.
The election is made in the Italian tax return for the year of arrival or the next. Income earned in Italy is taxed in the ordinary way.
