In short, current to October 2026

  • On $300,000 a year, income tax runs from $48,529 in Zug to $131,442 in Vienna, $82,913 a year apart, for a single filer on 2026 rates.
  • On $100,000 a year: $5,998 in Zug, $31,833 in Vienna.
  • Germany and Austria tax income nationally, so Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt read the same, and so do Vienna and Salzburg.
  • In Switzerland the canton and the commune add their own tax on top of the federal one, so the Swiss cities differ: on $300,000, $48,529 in Zug, $78,539 in Zurich, $93,840 in Geneva.
  • Income tax only. Social contributions are not included, and for employees in Germany and Austria they are a large part of the bill.

Questions

The short answers.

Is income tax the same in Berlin and Munich?

Yes, the income tax itself is set nationally in Germany, and the solidarity surcharge with it.

Church tax differs a little by state and is left out here, as it applies only to church members.

Why do Zurich, Zug and Geneva differ so much?

Swiss income tax has 3 layers: federal, cantonal and communal.

The federal layer is the same everywhere. The canton and the commune set their own rates, which is why Zug and Geneva sit far apart on the same income.

Are social contributions included?

No. These are income tax figures only.

In Germany and Austria an employee also pays pension, health and unemployment contributions on salary up to each ceiling. In Switzerland the old age contribution has no ceiling. For a salaried reader they change the take-home pay a great deal.

The Dossier: your top 3, on your numbers.A written report on the 3 places that rank first for you, compared line by line on your income, a sale, your passports and your family. 10 chapters, written the moment you pay. The Patrician Letter

The rules move. Be told when they do.

Sent when it earns the send, not on a schedule. Never shared, one tap to stop.

Income tax on the published 2026 rules. Social contributions, most deductions and treaties are not modeled. Figures are for a non-US single filer. Wealth tax, an exit and your passports are added when you run the engine on your own numbers. Not advice. Residence rules change often. Verify before acting.
