Zurich, the best place to live in the world.

Zurich leads the Patrician.ch 100 for 2026, ahead of Monaco and Geneva. Safety, schools, hospitals and a city that works carry it past places that tax far less.

· figures current to October 2026

The best place to live in the world in 2026 is Zurich. It leads the Patrician.ch 100 with a score of 67.9 out of 100, ahead of Monaco at 65.8 and Geneva at 65.5. The list scores 100 places where high earners and wealthy families actually move, on 5 pillars and 22 categories, and it weighs safety above everything else, then freedom, the prestige of the address, happiness, infrastructure and schools.

Zurich does not win on tax. It wins because almost nothing about daily life there goes wrong. The streets are safe at any hour, the hospitals are among the best in Europe, the schools take children from every country, the trains run to the minute, and the people who live there rate their own lives among the highest anywhere.

The first 3 sit within a few points of each other, and the order below them turns on safety and on the season each place keeps. The full list of 100, with every score and the rank in each category, is on the Patrician.ch 100.

Why Zurich comes first

Safety. Zurich scores the top mark for safety, the category the list weighs most. In a ranking built for families who move with their children and their assets, a place that is merely pleasant but unsafe at night does not reach the top 10.

Hospitals and schools. A resident is minutes from hospitals that rank with the best in the world, and the international schools of the city and the lake shore serve the families of the banks, the insurers and the trading houses that keep their headquarters there.

A city that works. Zurich ranks first of 100 on infrastructure, with Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong. The airport is a short train ride from the center.

Happiness. In the World Happiness Report 2026, Switzerland ranks 10th of 147 countries, with a life evaluation of 7.018 out of 10.

Money. Zurich is the leading financial center of Switzerland. The Global Financial Centres Index of September 2026 places it 10th of 117 financial centers, with a rating of 749.

What Zurich takes in tax

Zurich is not a low-tax address by Swiss standards. On the Patrician.ch 2026 model, a $1M salary pays an effective 36% in income tax in Zurich and keeps $6.4M over 10 years. Zug, half an hour away by train, charges 21% on the same income, and Monaco charges 0%.

Over 10 years, Monaco keeps $3.6M more of a $1M salary than Zurich. That gap is most of Monaco's case against Zurich, and on this list it is not enough: Zurich leads Monaco on schools, on hospitals, on infrastructure and on happiness.

Monaco has what few places can match for the very wealthy: its harbor, its Grand Prix and its season. Zurich leads the Life pillar of the list. For a family that will live in the place every day, the list gives Zurich the edge.

Zurich is the rare city that comes out on top of lists built in very different ways.

Travel + Leisure reported on 1 September 2026 that the JB study also found Zurich's unemployment at 2.9%. The Patrician.ch 100 differs from all of these in one way that matters to its readers: it models what a high earner keeps after tax in every place, and it scores the pull a place holds for the very wealthy, from its watch and car houses to its season.

How the list is built

Every place gets a Patrician.ch Score out of 100, built from 5 pillars and 22 categories: Safety, Wealth, Business, Life and Luxury. Safety counts the most, then freedom, the prestige of the address, happiness, infrastructure and schools. Income kept after tax counts as 1 of the 22, so a place cannot buy its way to the top with a low rate. No place, firm or government can pay for a rank. The method, with the source of every category, is in how the list is ranked.

The list is the general case. A reader's own income, passports and family change the order, and the engine ranks all 100 on those numbers.
