Moving to Monaco from Stockholm.

What a high earner from Stockholm keeps after income tax at home and in Monaco, on 2026 rules: $493K more a year on $1M in Monaco, and the Swedish rule that follows the move.

In short, current to October 2026

  • On $1M of income, a single filer in Stockholm owes $493K in income tax, an effective 49%, on Patrician.ch's 2026 model. In Monaco, which has levied no personal income tax since 1869, the figure is $0 for a non-US national who is not French.
  • Monaco keeps $493K more a year on $1M, $4.9M over 10 years.
  • A US citizen owes US federal income tax on worldwide income wherever they live, so in Monaco a US citizen on the same $1M still owes $320K on the engine's federal floor.
  • For a Swedish or other EU passport the route into Monaco is a straightforward permit: residence card with proof of accommodation and a local bank relationship. Nationals from outside the EEA and Switzerland route through a French long stay visa first. The flight from Stockholm is 3h 05m nonstop.
  • Figures are current to October 2026 and modeled on 2026 headline brackets for a single filer. Not tax, legal or immigration advice.

Income tax, a year

Stockholm or Monaco, on the same income.

A single filer, income tax only, on Patrician.ch's 2026 model, converted at the board's reference rates. The Stockholm figure comes from Sweden's scale for Stockholm in the Patrician.ch origin model (the national tax plus the Stockholm city municipal and regional tax, 30.55% in 2026, Skatteverket). Monaco levies no personal income tax.

IncomeStockholmMonacoMonaco keeps more, a yearOver 10 yrs
$500K$240K (48%)$0 (0%)$240K$2.4M
$1M$493K (49%)$0 (0%)$493K$4.9M
$3M$1.5M (50%)$0 (0%)$1.5M$15.0M

Social contributions and most deductions are not modeled. A US citizen in Monaco owes US federal tax: $138K on $500K, $320K on $1M, $1.1M on $3M on the engine's floor. The foreign earned income exclusion covers a capped slice of salary and none of the investment income, so the model leaves it out.

The catch

What the move does not settle.

Sweden presumes the tie holds for 5 years. Under chapter 3 of the Swedish Income Tax Act (Inkomstskattelag 1999:1229, sections 3 and 7), a person who keeps an essential connection to Sweden stays fully taxable there. A Swedish citizen, or anyone who lived in Sweden for at least 10 years, is presumed to keep that connection for 5 years after leaving unless they show otherwise. A home, family, a business or property in Sweden all count toward it (riksdagen.se, read 23 October 2026).

Gains on shares follow for 10 years. Sweden keeps the right to tax your gains on shares in Swedish companies, and in foreign companies bought while you lived there, at 30% for 10 years after you leave, if you lived there at any point in the 10 years before the sale. Some tax treaties shorten that window, the Luxembourg treaty to 5 years. Leaving Sweden: the exit tax →

A US passport keeps its tax. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live. Monaco levies none, so a US citizen there owes the full federal figure, $320K on $1M. How a US citizen is taxed abroad →
